Equality Act Could Provide Much Need Legal Protections

A 2015 Pew Research poll revealed that support for same-sex marriage has steadily grown over the years. Today, 55% of Americans support same-sex marriage and 39% stand in opposition. This survey, combined with the landmark Supreme Court ruling to make same-sex marriage a nationwide privilege, is certainly cause for excitement. But by the same token, our country still has a long way to go when it comes to equality.

Lawmakers reinforced this fact when they introduced the Equality Act last week. If successful, this bill would modify the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Fair Housing Act, and the Equal Credit Opportunity Act to unequivocally cover sexual orientation and gender identity.

At the present, it is unclear whether this bill will pass anytime soon. Both chambers of Congress are currently controlled by Republicans, none of whom backed the Equality Act. Even still, just the introduction of the bill is a sign that lawmakers have not lost sight of what the LGBT community really needs.

Equality Across the Board, Not Simply in Marriage

The Equality Act in no way discredits the magnitude of the Supreme Court ruling on June 26. It does, however, show that LGBT individuals need our support. At my firm, The Law Office of Stephanie J. Squires & Associates, APLC, I seek to offer legal assistance to all same-sex couples in need. I understand the pain of having your rights disregarded and am prepared to aggressively pursue the outcome you desire.

As time continues to march onward, it will be interesting to see what happens with the Equality Act. LGBT individuals deserve greater legal protections in the workplace and at school and this bill would go to great lengths to provide exactly that.

If you require representation for a matter related to family law, get in touch with my firm! I am a Rancho Cucamonga divorce attorney who is committed to your best interests, regardless of the changing political landscape.
